Colin Saunders wins State Championship
Colin Saunders wins state tournament!

Colin Saunders ’12 has wrestled well all season. He entered the Pennsylvania Independent State Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT) with a 21-2 record and was the #1 seed in the event. Because of his seed, Colin had a bye in the first round. He followed this up with pins over opponents from Friends Central and Germantown Friends. This propelled Colin into semi-finals for his second day of competition. In semi-finals, Colin beat George Kaufman of Westtown for the second time this year by a major decision. This set up a rematch against Dan Traficanti of The Kiski School. Colin beat Trafacanti 4-1 earlier in the year.

In finals, Colin started off the match with a quick takedown. However, he had to work hard to maintain that brief lead. Traficanti escaped and ended the period 2-1. After an escape tied the match in the second period, Colin had to scramble to avoid several excellent shots from his opponent.

Colin earned the escape in the third period to take the lead. The two young men battled to try and take each other down for two more minutes, but with no points scored Colin walked off the mat victorious! Colin is Hill’s first PAISWT state champ since Zach Stone ’06, who won at 189 lbs. in 2006.

Seven Blues wrestlers place in state tournament

The Blues continue to show significant growth from their young team. Two years ago, only three wrestlers placed in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Wrestling Tournamant (PAISWT) and we had one sixth and two seventh place finishes. Last year had a small improvement as the team had three eighth place finishers and one third place finish. This year, the Blues had seven of our eleven wrestlers enter and place in the top seven!

Jay Knighton ’10 made it to the finals of PAISWT by pinning Trevor Lehroy of Westtown in the first period. In finals, Jay had a rematch with Malvern heavyweight, Joe Ditrolio. Last time they met, Jay lost a heartbreaker in overtime. This match followed a similar pattern, ending as a tie in regulation. Neither wrestler could manage a takedown in the extra period and the match went to rideouts. Jay successfully escaped from Ditrolio during his period, but Ditrolio was able to reverse Jay to earn the victory. Joining Jay in the finals was Colin Saunders '12 who beat Dan Traficanti of The Kiski School for the state championship.

Steele Phillips ’09 and Kyle Place ’09 finished fourth at the tournament at 135 lbs. and 215 lbs. respectively. Steele went 2-2 during the tournament and matched his seeding to finish fourth. Kyle also finished fourth, but had to defeat third seed Dan Devine of Malvern to do so. Unfortunately, during his third place match Kyle cramped up while taking down his opponent and was pinned in the process.

Jack Sullivan ’11 wrestled an excellent tournament going 4-2 to finish in fifth place. Jack showed great stamina and heart throughout the state tourney.

Tyler Mueller ’10 and Karl "Wiz" Wiszumerski ’11 were placed into extremely tough brackets, but wrestled extremely well over the two-day event. Wiz had to battle back from a first round defeat and went 3-2 to take seventh place. Tyler lost a hard fought battle in a rematch against Kevin Eberly of Haverford. After the loss, Tyler bounced back and pinned Dan Kurnick of Friends Central to finish in seventh place.

The team finished in seventh place overall, just passing Chestnut Hill in the final round, but unable to catch Episcopal Academy. The Blues also stayed ahead of MAPL competition Mercersburg who finished tenth. Congratulations to Wyoming Seminary who won the tournament.

Best results at Preps in nearly a decade

Hill brought all seven of its state tournament placers to the 74th Annual Lehigh Prep National Tournament, and every wrestler contributed to a great event. Each wrestler won at least one match during the event, with Steele Phillips leading the team with four wins. Going into the final match of the first day, the Blues still had five wrestlers alive. Colin Saunders lost a heart breaker when he was unable to get out of leg offense; he finished the tourney with three wins and two losses. Tyler Mueller hit a tough wrestler from Maryland who locked him in a cradle to win the match; Tyler finished 2-2. Kyle Place and Jay Knighton both lost minor decisions to finish their day 2-2. Only Steele Phillips was able to win his match, which he wrestled very intelligently. Steele beat Gino Pollock of Mt. St. Joe’s 5-2. Steele outlasted his opponent, earning two takedowns late in the match to assure his victory. The Blues ended the first day in 20th place out of 124 teams.

Also wrestling on the first day were Jack Sullivan who went 2-2 and Karl Wiszumerski who went 1-2.

On the second day, Steele Phillips matched up with Eric Fessell of Georgetown Prep. Steele hit him with a head-and-arm to a far ankle cradle, earning a five-point move. This early lead allowed Steele an easy 7-1 victory and guaranteed placement. Steele lost a rematch with Naeem Boucher of St. Benedict’s, and then lost the seventh place match to Ryan Owens of John Carroll. Steele is the Blues first National Prep All-American since Dan Hoffman.

The team finished in 24th place overall.

All alumni still are welcome to join our  “Friends of Hill Wrestling” page on Facebook. There was a surge in members after the last newsletter and I am hopeful that this will be a place for alumni to communicate while keeping up with the wrestling program. I will post updates of the upcoming freestyle season on this site.
