| Students enjoy a beautiful fall day on Hill’s campus. |
As members of The Hill family, students learn about values. To be sure, the School's motto -- "Whatsoever things are true"-- is not merely a phrase or inscription. We refer to and talk about our motto with frequency and with high regard. To Hill students, faculty, staff, and alumni, "Whatsoever things are true" is a compelling touchstone of daily life, a part of the countless teaching and learning opportunities that occur each day from dawn to dusk.
This examination of personal ethics occurs in subtle, nonjudgmental ways -- from give-and-take in the dormitories to mealtime conversations with friends from diverse backgrounds. We reinforce a respect for honesty and integrity through our student-created Honor Code and twice-weekly nondenominational chapel services. Perhaps it is Hill's unabashed emphasis on thoughtfulness and conduct that has contributed to our students' reputation as courteous, unpretentious young men and women.
Also, as in a family, Hill students work together and enjoy each other's company. Hill boys and girls learn sportsmanship on the athletic fields and relax in the student center; they plan weekend activities; and they contribute to the quality of communal life by performing "work jobs" on campus and volunteering in Pottstown. And, like a close-knit family, Hill students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni enjoy rich, shared traditions that connect them with one another and to their shared past.
Our headmaster, David R. Dougherty, summarizes the uniqueness of The Hill in one word: "Hillness." Mr. Dougherty notes that Hillness embraces six qualities: hard work, self-discipline, tradition, values, genuineness, and leadership.
The Hill's highest priorities also may be summarized in one word: excellence. The Hill strives to provide an excellent liberal arts education, based upon core skills and knowledge. Within a nurturing residential community, we strive to fortify our young people's character through the mentorship of excellent teachers and coaches. And, finally, we encourage students to become leaders, always endeavoring to bring excellence to the world in which they live.
