Tennis at The Hill School has a long tradition of excellence and achievement. The school fields a large number of players from beginner to tournament-level on its Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Thirds teams. The Varsity schedule consists of up to 20 matches against a variety of top prep schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including local high schools. The boys compete in two major tournaments throughout the season: the New England/Mid Atlantic, “NEMA,” tournament against the top prep schools from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania and the culminating MAPL championship against its division rivals. The match format within the MAPL league is the typical six singles, three doubles college format. Non-league matches often call for five singles players and two doubles teams, but can vary based on the competition. Hill’s outstanding tennis facilities include 11 outdoor courts, three indoor practice courts, and two stringing machines.
The Hill is looking forward to a strong 2012 season, with several players returning from last year’s squad. Co-Captains Matthew Windsor ’12, and Jack Liu ’13 come back after strong seasons at numbers 1 and 2 respectively. They will face competition for the top of the ladder from returner Jake Eckhart ’13, and newcomer Jack Barry’14. Sang Ha Jung ’14, Marcus Sass ’13, and Aaron Hamburger ’12 are all playing at high levels and look to take their skills back into play this year. The team eagerly anticipates the arrival of new players John Moran ’12 (PG), and James Wright ’15 who will have strong impacts on the doubles and singles courts. Last year’s Junior Varsity standout John Carson ’14 is poised to have an impact on this year’s team as well. With an incredible depth of talent, both on Varsity and JV, the Rams have great potential to build on last year’s success and to go far in MAPL and beyond.
The coaching staff for the Varsity team consists of Head Coach Ira Watts, a longtime area tennis coach and four-year veteran at the Hill. John Coit joins Ira as an assistant on the staff this year, and both look to bring their tennis backgrounds and teaching acumen to build another successful season at Hill.
