Wrestling: Mark Pearson

Mark Pearson '78 returned to The Hill and became head wrestling coach in 2011.  After graduating from The Hill, Coach Perason wrestled for Big Ten power University of Michigan. After graduating from Michigan in 1982, he began his coaching career at the collegiate level, spending time at Franklin and Marshall College and Millersville University, both located in Lancaster, Pa.  He began his boarding school career in 1991 at St. Alban's school in Washington, D.C., where he taught history and coached wrestling. He returned to The Hill in 1995, and for five years was an instructor of English and a wrestling coach. Under his guidance, Hill's teams of the late 1990's resembled the powerhouse teams of the 1950s and 60s, posting records of 18-2 in 1998-99 and 14-2 in 1999-2000. He left The Hill in 2000 and worked toward advanced academic degrees before returning to coaching in 2005 at the Kinkaid School in Texas, where he remained until returning to The Hill for a second stint as a teacher and coach in 2011.

Shortly after graduation, he took over as head coach of Blair Academy. In his first year as head coach, his team won Blair’s first ever Prep National Championship. His teams’ went on to win two more National Championships and 10 New Jersey State Championships. Coach Hutchinson’s high school teams have produced four NCAA DI National Champions, 13 NCAA All-Americans, and one Olympic gold medalist (Bobby Weaver). He has been selected by Wrestling USA Magazine and US Wrestling Federation as National Coach of the Year.

Coach Hutchinson also spent 12 years at Lehigh University where he served as both assistant and head coach. While at Lehigh, he produced three more NCAA Champions. It was at this time that he had the opportunity work directly with Sergei Beloglazov, a six-time World Champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and former Head National Coach for Russia. Coach Hutchinson joined The Hill community in order to share his wrestling knowledge and teach physics. His son is enrolled at The Hill as a member of the class of 2012.
Assistant Coach Rick Rappo
