Student clubs
Hill students also can lead by creating and guiding various clubs and organizations with the supervision of a Hill faculty member. There are a variety of different student-run clubs to get involved with here at The Hill including Action AIDS, Meet the Need, Speech/Debate Club, Cooking Club, and many others. Clubs are organized and run by students and overseen by a faculty adviser. Whether students share a common interest or are involved with raising money for a charity, there are a variety of clubs in which you may participate. Read a complete list of student clubs at Hill.

Discipline Committee
The Hill School’s core values are supported through the discipline system. When a student violates a major School rule he or she is seen by the Discipline Committee. The Discipline Committee, chaired by the Dean of Students, is comprised of students and faculty elected by their peers to hear issues of individual cases, deliberate as a group, and vote independently in a recommendation presented to the Headmaster regarding whether a student should remain a part of The Hill community. While it is challenging for students to serve on this committee, it also is an honor, for they are selected based on their leadership skills and reputation for integrity and diplomacy.

Music
Similar to the athletic captain, the music ensembles have student leaders called presidents. The Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble president also is a student director of the ensemble. The Glee Club, Chorus, Hilltones, and Hilltrebles each have a president who also lead the groups. These positions are elected by their peers.

Peer tutors
Supported by the peer counseling program, peer tutors are peer counselors who have achieved an average grade of a B or higher in the subject they wish to tutor. The peer tutoring program serves as an academic support system for students by offering one-on-one assistance with a tutor who specializes in a certain subject.

Chapel speakers
Hill students can demonstrate leadership by serving as Chapel speakers. Students are strongly encouraged to volunteer for this opportunity to write and deliver their own insightful messages to the Hill community. Dates are assigned when students register to volunteer; however, since there is a limited number of speaking dates available each year, students are asked to register in the beginning of the fall term. Listen to Chapel talks given by our students and faculty members.

Team captains
All varsity teams at The Hill have a captain or co-captains, chosen by members of the team with guidance and approval of the coaching staff. Ideally, captains are chosen at the conclusion of the previous season, to enable them to:

  • Grow into their leadership duties during the off-season, and
  • Participate fully in HAA activities prior to their season.

Captains are expected to understand and model The Hill’s athletic ideals and expectations, and will be required to facilitate the relationship between players and coaches in whatever way their coaches define. They must combine open and candid conversations with an appropriate respect for confidentiality.

Hill Athletic Association
The Hill Athletic Association (HAA) is comprised of the captains from all varsity teams, plus one elected representative of that year’s group of post-graduate students. The HAA is responsible for serving the student body by directing HIll vs. Lawrenceville Week spirit activities, the Blood Drive, and The Hill Fitness Challenge. In addition, they approve all “Major H” awards and certify the selection of teams to the Trophy Room. Meetings are used for leadership training to encourage the sharing of experience and to help captains benefit from the experiences of others.
