At this stage in their Hill education, sixth form students should already be registered on Collegeboard and have an account with ACT. Parents, please be aware several students subsequently incurr multiple accounts, so please speak with your son or daughter before registering. Students need to access these accounts for the College Advising Office and testing. View the testing schedule for the 2011-12 academic year.

Please contact Director of Testing Morgana Schlick at mschlick@thehill.org or 610-705-1037 if you have any questions about standardized testing.

1.  Take the January 28 SAT reasoning test and May 5 SAT reasoning test

2.  Register for the September 10 ACT Plus Writing test

  • The ACT exam is comprised of five sections: a 75-question, 45-minute English test; a 60-question, 60-minute mathematics test; a 40-question, 35-minute reading test, a 40-question, 35-minute science test; and a 30-minute essay test (optional).
  • It is recommended that students take the ACT Plus Writing exam as most colleges will require the writing section. The benefit of taking the ACT is that if students do not score well on the test, the results do not have to be reported to colleges (only SAT scores will need to be submitted). However, if a student scores high on the ACT, this may be the only score that would need to be reported.
  • The website for registering is www.actstudent.org. The cost of the ACT Plus Writing is $49.50.

3.  Take SAT subject tests in the fall if appropriate

  • SAT subject tests are one-hour long multiple-choice assessments. Students may take up to three tests in one sitting. The number of SAT subject tests required varies among colleges; therefore, it is best to check each school's admission requirements. Since students most likely will not have a complete list of schools to which they will be applying, we recommend taking subject tests at the completion of the appropriate course.
  • Subject tests are offered in the following fields of study: literature, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics 1 & 2, U.S. history, French, Spanish, German, Modern Hebrew, and Latin. Students should speak with his or her college adviser and teacher for advice about these tests.
  • The cost of the SAT subject test is approximately $22.00; additional fees may apply depending on the quantity of exams being taken.
4.  If a student is taking an Advanced Placement course, registration for the exam should be done through his or her teacher in that subject area before spring break. Each exam costs $86.00.

5.  Special accommodations for testing
  • Students who have special needs or learning differences may be eligible to receive extended time accommodations. In order to be granted extended time, students must be evaluated by a qualified learning specialist (licensed or certified in a medical or allied health discipline) who can diagnose particular disabilities. A copy of the evaluation must be provided to the Office of Testing. Parents should be aware that there is no guarantee a student will be granted an extended time request, as this decision is under the jurisdiction of the testing companies. If you believe your child is eligible, please contact Director of Testing Morgana Schlick at mschlick@thehill.org or 610-705-1037. Please note: Requests for accommodations must be brought to the School's attention at least 10 weeks prior to the test date.
