The Hill School presented its rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” on Friday, Feb. 19 through Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010. at 2 p.m. "Into the Woods," is based on children's classic fairy tales and the book by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Director Burton Merriam noted that “Into the Woods” is “musically and technically a very difficult show, with a number of special effects required – certainly one of the most adventuresome pieces we’ve ever done at The Hill.”
However, Merriam emphasizes, “This also is one of the most serious casts I’ve ever seen. They have rallied behind this show; they have a good sense of discipline and they have been extremely dedicated to this production. This is going to be a wonderful theater experience!”
Merriam also had high praise for Stephen Longenecker, Hill’s vocal music director and music director for “Into the Woods.”
“Stephen is fantastic,” Merriam said. “He has a great sense of drama. He also worked with the vocally talented cast on the music for two weeks before we ever even started blocking. Together, we’ve made a great team: He is wonderful in terms of preparing the music, and I’m good at putting ‘pictures’ on stage.”
Technical Director and Scenic Designer, Michael McKibben, has worked with his tech crew to build an “ominous-looking” set with his own creative twist.
