The “Writers at Work” speaker series brings people from the world of words to campus to expose the students to the ideas, methods, and lives of real, working writers. The series is run by Tony Reid, ’75, the director of the Hill’s Writing Center, who spent 30 years as a newspaper editor and reporter, the last 22 at the Washington Post.
Christine Brennan, a sports columnist for USA Today, and one of the most prominent and respected sports writers of the last quarter-century, kicked off the series with a talk on September 24 in the Memorial Room of the Ryan Library. Next on the schedule is Adam Bernstein, obituaries editor of the Washington Post, who will speak to students the week of Halloween. On February 23, 2010, Billy Collins, a former U.S. poet laureate, widely considered to be the most popular American poet since Robert Frost, will be on campus to meet with students and read from his works.
