 | | Henry | I am in my seventh year working at The Hill as assistant head for academics and teaching advanced placement calculus. As one of the co-chairs for the 2002-2007 Strategic Plan, I experienced first-hand how carefully this school plans for the future. My primary responsibilities include oversight of the curriculum; student schedules; hiring and supporting faculty; chairing the Academic Council; advising the Honor Council; and overseeing academics, athletics, the arts, and organizing the Bissell Forum speakers series. In the absence of the Headmaster, I oversee the School. For 12 years prior to coming to The Hill, I worked as the academic dean, a math teacher, and a housemaster at Lawrenceville School. I have also worked at Agnes Irwin School, Springside School, and Milton Academy. My husband, Dick, and I worked for two years as Peace Corps volunteers in Nabeul, Tunisia. At The Hill, I also help with scorekeeping for the girls' varsity field hockey team, boys' and girls' varsity basketball, and girls' varsity lacrosse. We have three grown children: Megan, the middle school dean of students and a history teacher at St. John's School in Houston, Texas. Marion; a resident in surgery at Yale University; and John, a sports media editor for AOL. Living with us at Hillrest are a Labrador retriever and four cats. When not participating in school activities, I enjoy photography, quilting, sewing, needlework, and travel. When not on campus, my family and I enjoy spending time in our home in South Carolina.

 | | Malone | I grew up in the close-knit Pennsylvania college town of Swarthmore. My love of history began before I can even remember it, fostered as it was by friends, family, and endless access to books of every kind. In addition to all that, life in Swarthmore was also responsible for introducing me to field hockey and lacrosse at a very early age, beginning love affairs that continue to this day. I left Swarthmore and headed off to spend my undergraduate years at Yale, where I received my B.A. in history, as well as having the opportunity to play on Yale's very first varsity level teams in both field hockey and lacrosse. I knew all along that I was destined for graduate school in history, and I had the good fortune to return "home" to the University of Pennsylvania--where my father had taught and been an administrator for many years, and my sister had been an undergraduate--to continue my studies. I received my Ph.D. in history in 1981, specializing in American history between the eras of the Revolution and Civil War. After 10 years of college and university teaching, research, and writing, I made the happy switch to boarding school life - happy, because in addition to the teaching of history, which is my first love, it also allowed a return to life in a close knit academic community, as well as field hockey and lacrosse. After 11 years at Brooks School in Massachusetts, I was delighted to have the opportunity to return home to Pennsylvania and join The Hill community. I live in Sherrerd House. I was appointed director of studies in July 2004, and I teach AP U.S. history and American studies. I also coach field hockey and lacrosse.
