I am in my seventh year working at The Hill as assistant head for academics and teaching advanced placement calculus. As one of the co-chairs for the 2002-2007 Strategic Plan, I experienced first-hand how carefully this school plans for the future. My primary responsibilities include oversight of the curriculum; student schedules; hiring and supporting faculty; chairing the Academic Council; advising the Honor Council; and overseeing academics, athletics, the arts, and organizing the Bissell Forum speakers series. In the absence of the Headmaster, I oversee the School. For 12 years prior to coming to The Hill, I worked as the academic dean, a math teacher, and a housemaster at Lawrenceville School. I have also worked at Agnes Irwin School, Springside School, and Milton Academy. My husband, Dick, and I worked for two years as Peace Corps volunteers in Nabeul, Tunisia. At The Hill, I also help with scorekeeping for the girls' varsity field hockey team, boys' and girls' varsity basketball, and girls' varsity lacrosse. We have three grown children: Megan, the middle school dean of students and a history teacher at St. John's School in Houston, Texas. Marion; a resident in surgery at Yale University; and John, a sports media editor for AOL. Living with us at Hillrest are a Labrador retriever and four cats. When not participating in school activities, I enjoy photography, quilting, sewing, needlework, and travel. When not on campus, my family and I enjoy spending time in our home in South Carolina.

Kathryn R. Malone, Ph.D., director of studies, instructor of history

I grew up in the close-knit Pennsylvania college town of Swarthmore. My love of history began before I can even remember it, fostered as it was by friends, family, and endless access to books of every kind. In addition to all that, life in Swarthmore was also responsible for introducing me to field hockey and lacrosse at a very early age, beginning love affairs that continue to this day. I left Swarthmore and headed off to spend my undergraduate years at Yale, where I received my B.A. in history, as well as having the opportunity to play on Yale's very first varsity level teams in both field hockey and lacrosse. I knew all along that I was destined for graduate school in history, and I had the good fortune to return "home" to the University of Pennsylvania--where my father had taught and been an administrator for many years, and my sister had been an undergraduate--to continue my studies. I received my Ph.D. in history in 1981, specializing in American history between the eras of the Revolution and Civil War. After 10 years of college and university teaching, research, and writing, I made the happy switch to boarding school life - happy, because in addition to the teaching of history, which is my first love, it also allowed a return to life in a close knit academic community, as well as field hockey and lacrosse. After 11 years at Brooks School in Massachusetts, I was delighted to have the opportunity to return home to Pennsylvania and join The Hill community. I live in Sherrerd House. I was appointed director of studies in July 2004, and I teach AP U.S. history and American studies. I also coach field hockey and lacrosse.

After graduating from The Hill in 1997 I headed for Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. where I earned a B.S. in computer science. Upon my graduation in the spring of 2001, I returned to The Hill to start the 2001-2002 school year as the Director of Scheduling. My main function is the creation and maintenance of the master course schedule. I also manage the work job program and dining hall seating assignments, as well as the database that contains all of the student and much of the faculty information. When I have extra time I help other departments get the data they need from the Academic Office's database. Throughout the year I also help with other projects around the School, such as Career Day. In the Fall of 2004 I began teaching Digital Arts. The girls' varsity ice hockey team was formed during my first year back at the Hill. I have been an assistant coach of that team since its inception that year. In the summer of 2005 I moved into Foster Dorm where I now live with the 6th form boys, my many fish, and cat Maudie.

After attending York College, I married my husband Tom, with whom I have three grown children. In the Academic Office I am responsible for a variety of tasks connected with schedules, exams, and more. I also am the "front person," the first face most visitors meet when they come to our office. When not at work I enjoy time with my horse, Mariah.

I came to The Hill in August of 1997 after spending 25 years working in local government. I have a husband and two joys of my life -- my two shih-tzu puppies, Max and Molly. My functions in the Academic Office include preparing transcripts for new students and sending sixth form transcripts to colleges.
