The Humphrey Family Writing Center is Hill’s headquarters for the printed word. It is a place where writing is read, where it is taught, where it is analyzed, where it is critiqued, and where it is discussed. All of this is done to further the goal of making sure each Hill student graduates able to write clearly, concisely, accurately, and confidently. When Hill students matriculate at colleges around the country, we want them to be the best writers at those colleges, and we want them to be able to communicate effectively in writing in whatever career they choose.
How do we do this? First, we believe clear writing comes from clear thinking. If your thoughts are jumbled, your writing will reflect that. Students who bring their class papers or their college essays to the Writing Center are put through a process that involves discussion, revision, more discussion, and more revision. This helps students home in on what they’re trying to say, and then it helps them say it with clarity and force. Ideally, the process begins with a conversation about the outline of the work and ends with a conversation about the finer points of the writing.
