Rooms within the Ryan Library
The Memorial Room

The Memorial Room, located on the first floor, was the original lobby for The Hill School's old auditorium. The room is a memorial to Hill alumni who served in our country's wars. The names engraved in the rich wood wall paneling belong to alumni who served in World War I; the names starred are those who lost their lives as a result of combat. The memorial case in the alcove holds a book with the names of those who served and died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The stained glass windows in this room carry a military theme and were donated by Hill alumni. Information on the specific histories of these windows is available in the library archives. The room often is used for meetings and special presentations by distinguished guest speakers.

The Moffatt Room

The Moffatt Room, also on the first floor, is the center of library activity and was named for James V. Moffatt, a former librarian and assistant headmaster of The Hill. The stunning, eight-foot rotating Rand McNally globe makes its home here. The globe was presented to the School by Sandy McNally '58, of the long legacy of McNally family members who have attended The Hill. A large collection of Audubon prints and lithographs is featured in a beautiful natural setting in the Audubon Preserve area, thanks to a generous gift of these original works made by C. Porter Schutt '31. Visitors to the Moffat Room can walk through the former window area of the original auditorium into the adjoining reference area and see how the addition has blended the exterior of the historical Memorial Hall with the interior of the modern Ryan Library.

Scheerer Reading Room

On the third floor, the Scheerer Reading Room now occupies the space of the original William S. Scheerer, Jr. '17 Library. With its high, vaulted Gothic ceiling and windows, this room houses the majority of the book collection, as well as the entrance to the Writing Center.

Tech Lab

Located in the basement of The Ryan Library, the Tech Lab offers 24 high-end computer workstations that are available to students and faculty for classroom and research use.

The Audio/Visual Room

Located in the basement of The Ryan Library, the Audio/Visual Room is a 50-seat auditorium which allows access to digital and television feeds for classes and distance learning.

Other facilities

The ISD Help Desk is available for student and faculty computer repair, installation, and technical support.

The audio-visual department stores a large collection of DVD, VHS tapes, CDs, i-Pods, mini-DV video cameras, point-and-shoot cameras.

The Van S. Merle-Smith, Jr. '35 Archives Center functions as a repository for Hill memorabilia including the Alumni Collection, books written by and about Hill alumni.
