Dr. Henry V. Bender, Hill's Elizabeth Blossom Chair of Humanities, presented a paper at the 140th Annual Meeting of the American Philological Association held at the Marriott Hotel of Philadelphia on January 8-11, 2009. Dr. Bender’s paper was titled To Pod or not to Pod: Pod casting AP Vergil and AP Latin Literature.

During his talk, Dr. Bender presented the rationale for pod casting and discussed the benefits of instituting pod casting of his Advanced Placement course in Vergil, taught in the fall of 2007.

Joining Dr. Bender was Pieter Ouwerkerk ’08, who came from the University of Chicago and demonstrated the steps that he followed to record, annotate, and post the broadcasts on itunes. Pieter also noted that there have been more than 21,000 downloads of the pod casts since their initial posting.

Henry Spellman ‘05, a Morehead-Cain Scholar majoring in humanities and classics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and 2010 Rhodes Scholar recipient, also was present at the event.
