View Ways to "Green" your dorm room
COMPUTER SETTINGS:
The EPA recommends setting computers to enter system "standby" or "hibernate" after 30-60 minutes of inactivity. Set your monitor to shut off after 5-10 minutes. Change these settings in the Control Panel under the Power Options. [Note for laptops: be sure to change your settings for the AC power profile, not just the DC (battery power) profile.] For more detailed instructions, visit the EPA computer power management site.
PRINTING:
"Think before you print." Do you really need a hard copy? If so, reduce the amount of paper you use with the tips below.
Print preview. Use it every time you print! Check to make sure you're printing what you want and that you don't have extra pages printing at the end of your document.
Margins. Use the smallest margins you can. Change your default so it's automatic.
Automatic duplexing. Printing double-sided is very easy on some of our printers.
- For the color printer in the library workroom (LIB-D5100CN): File-Print; Click on “Properties”; On the “Finishing” tab, select “Print on both sides.”
- For the printer behind the Reference Desk in the library (Ryan1HP8000): File- Print; Click on “Properties”; On the “Paper” tab, under “Duplex,” select “Flip on long edge.”
- For other printers: After going to File-Print, explore the options for duplex printing.
Manual duplexing. You can choose manual duplex for most of the printers on campus. The printer will print every other page on one side. You'll need to reload the paper when instructed so it can print on the other side.
Using a copier. If you find that you can only print on one side but you need more than one copy, use a copier to create double-sided copies.
Students: If you're turning in a paper for class, ask your teacher if it can be double-sided. Faculty: put materials on Blackboard rather than printing; print double-sided when hard copies are needed; request that assignments be printed double-sided. Staff: investigate the functions on your local printer and print on two sides when you need a hard copy.
RECYCLING: Please visit our Recycling page for campus guidelines.
