| Paul Spiegel talks with Hill students |
On October 1, 2008, Paul Spiegel, a professional engineer, LEED AP, and the owner of Practical Energy Solutions came to Hill to discuss energy conservation tips for our community. Paul has been working with The Hill School to conduct an energy audit, and advises the School on ways in which we can save energy and reduce our carbon footprint. During his presentaion, Mr. Spiegel presented the Green Initiative with a goal for The Hill community of a 10% reduction in the monthly electricity use on campus.
Mr. Spiegel offered tips on energy conservation and will continue to be a great resource in helping us achieve our goal. The presentation was very educational for our Green Initiative group; the students are excited about the things they learned and are looking forward to the Green Cup Challenge. Leah Giffin, the school's Sustainability Coordinator, and Paul Spiegel will continue to work together in educating on ways in wchihc we can meet our goal of 10% reduction in the monthly electricity use on campus. The Green Initiative will post signs and posters in common areas around campus showing our total energy consumption, in addition, the information will be posted on the website. This will help guarantee the community is held accountable and made aware of our energy consumption as a whole.
So, you ask, what can I do to help conserve energy?
- Turn off lights, computers, printers, stereos, TV’s, and other electrical devices when you’re not using them
- Unplug phones and iPods when they’re finished charging.
- Use a power strip for your electronics and switch it off at night.
- Use task lighting instead of lighting an entire room.
- Switch incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents.
- Wash full loads of laundry, use the shortest cycle you can, and clean the dryer lint filter before each load.
- Use daylight when possible.
- Turn off lights in common rooms and bathrooms when you’re not using them.
- Put away your fans, Christmas lights, lava lamps, etc…
- Encourage others on campus to participate.
