The Recycling and Waste Reduction Group is proud to announce that The Hill now recycles plastics #1 - 7. The students are taking initiative to educate the community by their campaign of "Equal Recycling Rights," with fun slogans and signs posted around the recycling bins.

Why Recycle? Recycling How To at Hill...

The Hill has an active recycling program that includes:

  • Paper, cardboard, bottles & cans.
  • Cell phones and printer cartridges, recycled through the Green School Project.
  • Batteries and electronics collected for recycling through Stericycle.
  • Each boarding student has a recycling bin in his or her room to make sorting recyclables easier.
  • There are small bins for electronics, batteries, and printer cartridges on each hall and in many administrative areas, and these are collected periodically.
  • There are paper and bottle & can bins throughout campus.
  • At the end of the year during the student move-out, the Green Initiative also collects larger electronics, various metal and plastic items, and worn out fabrics for recycling.

Listen to The Hill's "Recycle Rap," created by Dan Adjangba ’08, Dave Singleton ‘08, and Alex Sohn ’08. Reduce, reuse, recycle...

Green Initiative recycles electronics

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010 The Hill School participated in The Tri County Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Equipment Recycling Day. Students from the Green Initiative( Hill’s sustainability club), Community Service program, and Environmental Science classes collected and dropped off six CRT monitors, 53 keyboards, 25 mice, 23 networking stations and a number of other outdated and unused electronics.

We look forward to continuing our stewardship and keeping our electronic waste from ending up in a landfill. Our work here in Pottstown is helping us as we work towards the bigger picture of a "greener" planet. In 2004, there were 315 million obsolete computers in the U.S. That amounted to 1.2 billion pounds of lead, 2 million pounds of cadmium, and 400,000 pounds of mercury into waste streams. At Hill we make sure our electronics are disposed of properly.
