Boyer Gallery exhibit features artwork by Hill teacher
Ellen Nelson, chair of The Hill School’s Arts Department, is one of a number of talented artists whose work has been selected by jurors and artists Piety Choi and Judy Lupas for the Perkiomen Valley Arts Center’s 56 Annual Open Juried Exhibition now on dsiplay at The Hill’s Center For The Arts’ Boyer Gallery.

Ellen’s selected painting, “Chakras,” is a mixed-medium piece of canvas, acrylic, modeling paste, bronze, glass beads, and gold wire. Its creation marked Ellen’s first time working with modeling paste, which she feels allowed her “to build up a surface not unlike relief sculpture.” Her motivation behind using the new medium “was to build something that is palpable to the senses as a three-dimensional form.”

Mentioned in the ancient texts of the Upanishads as sources of human energy, the seven chakras are each associated with distinct human talents and shadows of emotion. Ellen’s painting “was inspired by [her] study of the energy system of the chakras and their physiologic and psycho-spiritual associations.” Ellen says, “Through my art, I hoped to express the wonder, beauty, and miracle of this energy system.”

The exhibition, featuring Ellen’s beautiful piece, “Chakras,” is open from now through Friday, December 2, 2011 in the Boyer Gallery, located on 830 Beech Street, Pottstown, PA. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday by appointment.
