To the Faculty, Staff, and Students of The Hill School:
From Seoul, Korea, where Kay and I are visiting alumni, parents, and friends of The Hill, we share with all of you the excitement and sureness expressed by our Board of Trustees today with their selection of Zachary G. Lehman as the eleventh Headmaster of our School. This is a joyful day, and we are eager to join with you in that spirit, even though we are far away.
From the beginning of the search process, the Trustees and their Search Committee have embarked on their work with the seriousness and confidence that come from knowing that it is their most important responsibility to the School: the appointment of a new Head. It is even more so at our School, which in its 161-year history has had only ten headmasters. The Hill is both a far-sighted and stable place -- an ideal environment in which young people can best prepare for college, work, and life --and its leadership has labored long and well to sustain it, over the years supporting great teachers and wonderful young people. Nobody understands that better than our Trustees, and I join you in thanking all of them, especially Search Committee Chairman Marshall Wallach, ’61, in answering the call of the School at this important time.
On July 1 Mr. Lehman, his wife Amy, and their three children (Mitchell, Griffin, and Avery) will move to Pottstown, a new family in our Family Boarding School, but a family already committed to its ideals and principles, and a family eager to be part of its future. Mr. Lehman won the respect and the enthusiasm of everyone who met him during his two-day visit to The Hill last month, and Kay and I look forward to working with him and Amy to assure them both a warm welcome at The Hill and a smooth, effective transition of leadership.
You will of course hear more about all of that in the coming months, but now you must return to the first order of the day, the successful completion of the Fall Term and, for students, this afternoon’s Modern Language and Greek examinations. I will write you again in the coming days – from here, Hong Kong, Hanoi, and London – but for now, from Kay and me, best wishes for a great week and a good holiday with your family.
David Dougherty
