| Members of the Board of Trustees voted on November 14 | In October 2010, the leadership of the Board of Trustees began researching independent school consulting firms to assist in selecting Hill’s 11th headmaster. During its January 2011 meetings, the Board voted to hire Wickenden Associates of Princeton, N.J. and, in the spring of 2011, Jim and Martha Wickenden came to campus and conducted a series of interviews with people throughout the School community. Those discussions led to the creation of the Opportunity Statement posted at www.wickenden.com. The Opportunity Statement provided factual information about The Hill; an assessment of the School's strengths and challenges; and a list of qualities, skills, and experiences any prospective headmaster should bring to the position at Hill.
The Search Committee met on June 10, 2011, to review the timeline for the search and the Opportunity Statement. The Committee met again on September 8, 2011, to review the credentials of candidates submitted by the Wickendens. The candidate pool was filled with well-qualified people with proven leadership experience.
The Search Committee selected eight impressive semifinalists at the September 8 meeting and invited those candidates to be interviewed on September 24 and 25, 2011. The semifinalists shared their thoughts on the topics of character, leadership and governance, educational philosophy, fundraising, spirituality, and finance. The Search Committee met Sunday evening immediately after the last semifinalist interview to thoroughly review and evaluate the merits of each candidate and select three finalists.
Each outstanding finalist came to campus with his spouse for a two-day visit, during which they met with faculty, staff, students, trustees, and other representatives from the School. Visits occurred on October 17-18, October 19-20, and October 27-28. Input was solicited from all faculty and staff members and others from the extended Hill community. The thoughtful feedback as well as all other information acquired throughout the process was carefully reviewed by the Committee, which met on October 29 to decide which finalist to recommend to the Board of Trustees. After the Search Committee conducted its final due diligence, the Board met on November 14 and unanimously endorsed the Search Committee’s enthusiastic recommendation. |
