On Saturday, November 12, Hill's fall athletics teams traveled to Lawrenceville to take on the Big Red in the annual rivalry games that conclude the fall season. The highlights of the day were the varsity boys' and girls' soccer teams clinching the MAPL Championship with their respective results against L'ville.
The boys' overcame their disappointing Thursday loss to nationally ranked Haverford in the PAISAA Championship game to beat Lawrenceville 2-0 finishing the season with a 16-4-1 record overall, and a perfect 5-0 record in the MAPL. Colten Habecker '14 scored in the 46' and 70' (assist to Jamie Forrest '13 on the second goal) and keeper Ted Wolter '12 made six saves, including a PK save in the 20' to help record the team's tenth shutout of the season.
The girls' concluded a stretch of seven matches in 12 days with a thrilling 1-1 draw against the Big Red to win the MAPL Championship. Fresh off a PAISAA State Championship on Thursday, the girls' played their hearts out for 100 minutes to earn the MAPL-clinching tie. Deanna Mayza '13 scored her program-record 23rd goal of the season. The strong defense of Shannon '12 and Megan '13 Ruane, Keeley Spiess '14, Emily Sitko '13, and Courtney Logar '15 contained a potent Lawrenceville attack. Goalkeeper Julia Hernan '15 made the save of the season in the second overtime period to preserve the tie and, ultimately, the MAPL Championship. The girls' team finishes the season with a 17-2-2 overall record, and a 4-0-1 MAPL record.
Highlights of other varsity games:
- The football team dropped a tough game by a score of 42-15. A handful of fluke scoring plays and turnovers proved too costly for Hill, who finished the season with a 3-6 overall record (2-3 MAPL). Kawmi Larbi '12 and Seth Regensburg '13 scored Hill's touchdowns.
- Despite another strong finish from Quinn Davis '12, who won the race by 40 seconds, the boys' cross country team lost 22-37. A powerful MAPL Champion Lawrenceville team took the 2-5 spots to claim the team victory.
- Girls' cross country was led by sixth former Kathryn Walsh's third place finish, but lost 21-40 to a deep Lawrenceville squad 21-40. Monica Redfern '15 finished just five seconds behind Kathryn. The girls' return five of their top runners next season.
- Field hockey dropped a heartbreaker by a score of 3-2. The young team improved tremendously throughout the season and gave a deep, talented L'ville team all it could handle.
- Girls' tennis dropped a tough match by a score of 7-1. Mackenzie LeClair '14 picked up the lone victory on the day for Hill.
- Despite four combined goals from Lyndsey '12 and Maddison '14 Marcheskie, girls' water polo lost 12-6 to the Eastern Prep Champion Lawrenceville team. The girls' finished the season with a strong 16-10 record.
- Boys' water polo dropped a tough game by a score of 12-11. Leading the way for Hill were Richard Thomas '12 with four goals, Patrick Carmody '13 with three goals and three assists, and Brett Trumbauer '12 with two goals and three assists. The team rebounded from last year's rebuilding year to finish with a very respectable 13-7 record.
