Hill's second headmaster honored at Chapel service

Wreaths were placed at the graveside in memory of John and Marion Meigs

Today’s Chapel service included a remembrance of the death of John Meigs, the second Headmaster of The Hill School, on November 6, 1911, ending “the Professor’s” 35-year tenure at our school.

“Today we honor one of the great builders of The Hill,” said the Rev. Dr. John Houghton, chaplain. Listen to the Rev. Dr. Houghton's Chapel talk

The service included the singing by the Chapel choir of “Upon a Hill Our City Stands” by Alfred Raymond, Hill 1883; placement of wreaths at the graveside outside the Chapel, in honor of John and Marion Meigs; and the tolling of the Chapel bells.

Chaplain Houghton’s remarks included an old School prayer of thanks for what Meigs “did here with tireless labor, heroic enthusiasm, and high devotion to principle.”

Last week, Elizabeth Blossom Chairman of the Humanities Henry V. Bender, Ph.D. spoke about Meigs as well. Dr. Bender, Hill’s acting archivist, has prepared a display area in the library about Meigs and his tremendous contributions to The Hill. Listen to Dr. Bender's Chapel talk. Please note: This is a 13-minute talk and will take a moment to download before playing.
