Athletics teams' community service projects
During the 2011-12 school year, many of our athletics teams will participate in community service projects in Pottsown. Below is a recap of these endeavors.
Cross country team refinishes table
During preseason, the boys' cross country team lent a hand to a local non-profit. Developmental Enterprises Corp (DEC) runs a variety of services for adults with developmental disabilities, including paid occupational activities for clients. The DEC needed a table refinished, so the boys went down to the center, hauled the table up to the woodshop, and completely refinished it under the supervision of Mr. Block, Hill instructor of fine woodworking, and Mr. Wolter, Hill instructor of history. The newly-refinished table was then returned to the DEC by our afternoon community-service students, who also run a reading program there on Wednesday afternoons.
Library Book Sale, September 22 and 24
On a drizzly Thursday afternoon in September, several members of the boys' and girls' water polo teams went down to the Pottstown Public Library to help set up for one of their occasional book sales. Under the supervision of Mr. Wolter the students were able to form a human chain from the storage area down several flights of stairs to the sale location, making an otherwise formidable task a matter of just over an hour of work. In keeping with the 'many hands make light work' model, Mr. Wolter organized the boys' golf teams for the cleanup of the sale on the following Saturday. The ladies who run the Friends of the Library sale were pleased to have it done so efficiently.
Tennis players lend a hand with landscaping...and some painting
Several members of the thirds girls' tennis team joined Mr. Wolter, Hill instructor of history, for a landscaping project at our neighbor, the Genesis Pregnancy Center, located on High Street. The center helps young families with supplies and counseling when they first have young children. The girls managed to tame the bushes and clean up the leaves before the October snowstorm hit town.

The girls from thirds' tennis who did not help with the landscaping project came out the following week to paint the hallways of our neighbors at the Developmental Enterprises Corp, an agency that performs occupational therapy with persons with disabilities (photo on right).
